Thai Herbal Compress Treatment

February 11th, 2011

Ever wondered about those Thai herbal balls you see?  I always knew they were used as part of a massage treatment but never how they were used.

that's not me!

I gave it a go recently and yes, it’s pretty nice.

The way it was done at Thai Odyssey is you have a regular Thai massage for an hour.  During that hour, the balls are heated in a steamer.  After your massage, the next hour is given over to treatment with the steaming hot compress.  When they first use it on you, it’s a little dab on acupressure points.  Then as it cools down, they press it down on those points for longer periods.

I’m not sure the herbal stuff actually adds anything – really it’s more about the heat and the pressure – how can the herbs penetrate the skin that quickly?

Anyway, the important thing is to have the massage first, to loosen the knots, and then the hot compress to really loosen things up.

It’s a lovely sensation – you should already be pretty blissed out from the massage, then the heat on tight muscles is pretty ahhhh….

Me likey.

Oh yes, I love me a good massage.  And you must know I love you if I’m prepared to share my massage finds with you.

Twitter and FB followers know I fell out with Kenko Vivo and Uncle Tan (knot undoer extraordinaire) because they insisted on drilling and renovations during massage.  It never dawned on them that you might not want a wall next to you being drilled while you are being massaged.  Don’t start me…  grrr  *#@*##!!!!!

But because of that, I found a wonderful new place… over in Harbourfront, Thai Odyssey is a for-real Thai massage place.

Thai massage (not Thai Odyssey)

As in, the real Thai massage, by Thai masseurs.  The location (by the Ferry check-ins) might make you think they do er, other things as well but no, they do honest to goodness good massage.

Nice decor, and nothing tawdry or seedy about it.

Khun Piyoke does an awesome 90 minute traditional Thai massage.  Seriously, I think I get to the fringes of the galaxy I am so out of it.  Even though she’s pulling, kneading, pushing, twisting, I still find myself totally disappearing into a mushy pile of ahhhh.  It’s hard physical work for the masseuse and though she’s little, she’s strong!

There’s currently a special offer on for $68 for an hour’s Thai massage.

I also want to give the herbal compress a go too.

Hot, herbs, plus massage, ah…
