Surgery-free lipo? Sounds too good to be true.

from zeltiqcoolscuplting.com

But a new fat-busting device, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, is promising just that – a liposuction effect without a surgeon’s knife.

It works by literally freezing areas of fat, damaging the fat cells and causing them to shrink and die.  The body then gradually flushes out these dead fat cells over a period of 4 months.  One treatment can see a fat reduction of around 20%, with additional treatments increasing the results to up to 40%!

The system is getting good word-of-mouth globally and is now available through a number of clinics in Singapore.

Aimed at folks who want to target stubborn, exercise-resistant abdominal, flank and back fat – such as love-handles, muffin tops and post-pregnancy pooches – it is best suited to those with stable body weights who are in relatively good shape (those with fluctuating weight will likely regain the fat). It’s not an alternative to diet and exercise or for large volume fat reduction.

The procedure is non-invasive, performed in a doctor’s office, typically under the supervision of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. There is no anaesthesia needed or recovery time. During the procedure, tissue is drawn into Coolsculpting panels/cups using mild vacuum pressure. Patients may be slightly uncomfortable with the contact of the cold as the procedure begins, but this usually goes away as they adjust to the sensation.  There is no pain, but some may be mildly uncomfortable. The treatment of each area takes about an hour, which can add up to a fair chunk of time if you have multiple areas to treat. Patients are seated or lying down for comfort’s sake, but bring a book or an IPod to alleviate the boredom!

There is no downtime, and patients can return to normal activities, including work and exercise.  Some people may experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary.

Although Coolsculpting is designed primarily for the abdominal area, clinics in Singapore are using it on the thighs on a case-by-case scenario and on the upper arms too.  Sufficient volume of fat is needed for the current panels/cups to work their fat-dissolving magic.  The Zeltiq company is working on other sized panels/cups to specifically target other body areas, so no doubt these will be in-market soon.

Ok, now for the painful part.  The cost!  It ain’t cheap!  Each treatment costs around $1500 or more, which means about $3000 for most body areas (to treat both sides).
