Angry Birds Rio – the game

April 7th, 2011

You know I’m a terrible Angry Birds addict.  I’m a little OCD about 3-starring every Angry Birds game: the original, Seasons and now, the new Rio.

Interestingly, the game is tied to a movie Rio – about the adventures of the very angry birds in, yes, Rio.  Except instead of the pigs, the birds have been kidnapped, and the objective is to find and free Blu and Jewel, who are the main characters in the movie.

The game is like Angry Birds on acid.  New retina display, HD, fat birds, rich sound, but the same mechanics of flying different kinds of birds at objects.

Phase 1, out now, is 2 levels.  Level 1 features birds and level 2 is all about the monkeys.  When you fail a level, there’s a horrible laugh that is infuriating!

Wait till you get to the last game in level 2.  Utterly maddening.

The next phase is out in May, and more updates due later in the year.

This was a lot of fun to play, and a refreshing and good change from the original.  So far the 2 levels are much easier that some previous updates (Seasons: Christmas, for example) and I just love how it looks.

I’ve 3 starred 1 and 2 and am ready for the next update!

Still my favourite, and still great value for money for hours of infuriating fun.  I’m not sure I’d go and see the movie, but I can’t wait for more Angry Birds on my iPhone.

Topshop Knightsbridge

February 24th, 2011

Okay I know I’m a bit behind the curve on this one but I’m a bit outside the demographic.

I popped into Topshop’s new outlet at Knightsbridge (the Grand Park Hotel, opposite Paragon) and was surprised by how big it is.

It’s 11,500 sqft, split over 3 floors, and the biggest outside the UK and USA.

In fact, it’s got a bit of an Oxford Circus feel about it.  That’s the original Topshop in London that’s been a mecca for fashionistas rich and poor alike for as long as I can remember.  There too, you go downstairs for the full range of wares.  It fair took me back to my youth, going down the stairs to B1 – more clothes, shoes, makeup, underwear – it’s a really big range.  I almost felt like Alice falling down the wormhole and suddenly I was back in my 20s again!

There’s even a whole floor dedicated to fashionistos – boys, a whole floor for you!

Although I didn’t see anything I liked, I’m sure it’s because I didn’t go through all the rails of clothes – with such a big range, there’s gotta be something, right, or am I just too old to be trendy (or even care)?

I saw a girl shopping there with blonde/tea coloured hair (she’s asian), big false eyelashes, tiny skirt and Uggs (it was a sunny 3o˙ that day).  Maybe I am too old.

Designer outlet – ?

February 22nd, 2011

Tucked away in Cluny Court is a little shop, Treasure Link. (#02-16)

It has about 5  rails of clothes – bearing labels like Prada, Gucci, Valentino, Chanel, Miu Miu…and priced at $100 – $500.

There aren’t many pieces – so not a lot of size options.

Are they for real? Factory overruns?  I don’t know.  When I asked to take pictures they seemed to get really uncomfortable.  So I managed to take some surreptitious ones from the outside.

But some of the tops/dresses are unique and pretty interesting, no matter the name on the label.

You never know, you might find a true treasure.

Aveda and Lush, now in Sing

October 19th, 2010

The Toiletries Gods heard me!

My favourite brands have arrived in Sing!  Oh be still my shallow, superficial, toiletry-fetishist heart.

Aveda is available at Paragon at the new hair salon, Kelture.  Granted, it’s not quite the full selection, but the main stuff: Rosemary Mint (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, with a gentle smell of mint), Shampure (shampoo and conditioner, with a light flowery fragrance), some skincare (including the new anti-ageing Green Science) and the new chakra fragrances are available.  My favourite product is the amazing foot moisturiser Foot Relief – honestly, it makes your feet as smooth as a baby’s!  Available at Kelture, #05-07 Paragon.

Update Nov 10:  Aveda products will be available through selected hair salons in Singapore.  Not all salons will carry the full range.  There are no plans for a full Aveda store.

My other favourite toiletries brand, Lush, is known for using natural recipes for the good of your skin and hair.  I love the thought that when you are using the products you are nourishing your skin.  Now at last, someone is stocking some Lush here.  At the Holland Village Shopping Centre, Summerloft carries a small range of skincare, the (in)famous bathbombs and a stack of soaps.  When you hit the second floor you can smell the familiar smell of Lush presence!

I’ve asked the nice lady to bring in some of the amazing bodyscrubs so let’s hope that happens.

My poor friends who travel to/from the UK have had to keep me in Lush stock.Try Angels on Bare Skin – a fantastic face scrub that doesn’t dry out your skin but cleans it, feeds it and gives you a glow.  Lush’s version of a medieval recipe, it contains ground almonds and lavender oil.

Angels on Bare Skin

My other love, the Mask of Magnaminty is a delicious weekly mask for your face.  China clay and bentonite gel will pull the dirt from your pores, ground aduki beans and evening primrose seeds exfoliate surface skin cells, and peppermint oil nourish your skin plus you smell nice and minty.

Available at Summerloft, #02-05  Holland Village Shopping Centre, 67638682

A B Sutton

August 19th, 2010

iPhone, iTouch, iPad, iWant…

So you’ve Appled out.  And bestowed individualistic, loving covers on your i devices.  (and Blackberries too!)

You want a more personal, loving touch, but shudder at the thought of a Vuitton cover.  Too too much.

Let me introduce you to AB Sutton.

Based in New York, they make bespoke covers for iThings, wallets, Blackberry cases, Kindle cases out of leather, with monograms and silk linings.

Jack and Anna Featherly make your cases and covers in their studio.

"simple slip" for iPod Classic

Soft nappa leather, in a variety of colours.

You have a choice of silk linings, and detailing to choose from – be it a monogram (and a choice of font) or a starburst cut-out, or none.

You even choose whether the thread matches the leather or the lining.

a leather home for your new iPad

It takes a couple of weeks to get your order made up, and then it gets shipped to you.  The iPod Classic simple slip (above) is US$128 without shipping.

Years ago I got a gold iPod cover made.  Over the years, the leather has gotten softer, and the colour has faded beautifully.  Quality lasts.

Sharing the Love

July 1st, 2010

Downloaded by 500,000 around the world

I am afflicted and I wish to share it with you.  Apparently there are at least another 500,000 like me around the world.

Oh God, Angry Birds.  I am so horribly, horribly addicted.

Somewhere between Angry Birds and NCIS I have the shreds of a life.

This is a game for your iPhone, Touch, iPad or Nokia phone.

I’m playing, I check the time; it’s midnight, I say ‘just one more’ and twice now have stopped and discovered that it’s 4am.

What you have to do and your controls are fiendishly simple:  help the birds get revenge on the pigs by hurling them at the pigs.  Complications arise with different birds (turbo birds, birds that mulitiply, exploding birds) and the pigs’ fortifications.  There are 120 levels!

This is a wildly popular game, topping the iTunes stores in the UK, US and many other countries.  It’s been downloaded 500,000 times!  It’s no 1 in the Singapore app store too so I must look round for other Angry Birds zombies.

Have a look see:

More details and ovi store here

I’m sorry for your addiction in advance.  But it is SO MUCH FUN!!

PS:  there are videos to help you solve if you get stuck
