Pippa Middleton FTW!

April 30th, 2011

Sure, Kate looked absolutely beautiful – very princessy, dignified, elegant.

But for me, the real winner of the 2 billion viewers fame stakes – Kate’s younger sister and Maid of Honour Pippa Middleton.

She too, wore Alexander McQueen, in a little squiggly dress that left little room for error.  Or underpants.  Seriously, do you see any panty lines?  Would you dare to go bare-assed in front of 2 billion people??

Pippa’s such a hit that her bum has its own Facebook fan club: the Pippa Middleton Ass Appreciation Society!

Heading to the post-wedding party

I think she (and Kate) could’ve dialled down the make up and fake tan a bit but wow, stunning girls.

And she’s got the much better deal – the fun, the clothes, the events, without the obligations and duty of being Royal.

I don’t think she’ll have any shortage of dance partners…

Gorgeous Gew Gaws

April 1st, 2011

I’m not much of a jewellerist, and these days I live in gym or yoga gear.  Glamour doesn’t even drive down my street anymore, let alone come up to my door.

But this is so delicious, I just had to share.  I’m no girly-girl but even I get bedazzled by pretty jewellery.  Old school glamour, worn by the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly…

This Van Cleef & Arpels show is on at the Smithsonian if you’re lucky enough to be in Washington DC.

worn by Marlene Dietrich

that's a 95 carat yellow diamond!!

love this. opulent 70's?

a passepartout piece that could be worn as a belt, necklace, bracelet..so handy!

Bimba y Lola

March 10th, 2011

Again, am behind the curve.  Spanish brand Bimba y Lola (Bimba and Lola) has been in Singapore since Ion opened and yet I totally missed it until I stumbled across it the other day.  It’s totally my kind of thing and I can’t believe I’ve missed out all this time!

It’s in one of those funny corners on B1, and I must have walked past it a million times (maybe not quite that many).

If you are a fan of quality quirkiness, you’ll like this!  Less frilly than Ted Baker, and more classically eclectic, the clothes are expressive…while not outrageously out there.  Spanish mainstream Stella McCartney maybe?

If Ted Baker is Paul Smith <$, then Bimba y Lola is the Spanish and more tasteful equivalent.

It’s a shame that the store is so small, since their range is large – clothes, leather accessories, funky jewellery.  Still there’s online shopping on the site.

Topshop Knightsbridge

February 24th, 2011

Okay I know I’m a bit behind the curve on this one but I’m a bit outside the demographic.

I popped into Topshop’s new outlet at Knightsbridge (the Grand Park Hotel, opposite Paragon) and was surprised by how big it is.

It’s 11,500 sqft, split over 3 floors, and the biggest outside the UK and USA.

In fact, it’s got a bit of an Oxford Circus feel about it.  That’s the original Topshop in London that’s been a mecca for fashionistas rich and poor alike for as long as I can remember.  There too, you go downstairs for the full range of wares.  It fair took me back to my youth, going down the stairs to B1 – more clothes, shoes, makeup, underwear – it’s a really big range.  I almost felt like Alice falling down the wormhole and suddenly I was back in my 20s again!

There’s even a whole floor dedicated to fashionistos – boys, a whole floor for you!

Although I didn’t see anything I liked, I’m sure it’s because I didn’t go through all the rails of clothes – with such a big range, there’s gotta be something, right, or am I just too old to be trendy (or even care)?

I saw a girl shopping there with blonde/tea coloured hair (she’s asian), big false eyelashes, tiny skirt and Uggs (it was a sunny 3o˙ that day).  Maybe I am too old.

Designer outlet – ?

February 22nd, 2011

Tucked away in Cluny Court is a little shop, Treasure Link. (#02-16)

It has about 5  rails of clothes – bearing labels like Prada, Gucci, Valentino, Chanel, Miu Miu…and priced at $100 – $500.

There aren’t many pieces – so not a lot of size options.

Are they for real? Factory overruns?  I don’t know.  When I asked to take pictures they seemed to get really uncomfortable.  So I managed to take some surreptitious ones from the outside.

But some of the tops/dresses are unique and pretty interesting, no matter the name on the label.

You never know, you might find a true treasure.

Out There

February 1st, 2011

I wouldn’t describe myself as in anyway controversial.  If anything, I am pretty conservative, and avoid sticking out like a sore thumb.

Which is strange, given that I am quite er, vocal, when required (road rage, queue jumpers) and I’m not afraid to express an opinion.

But otherwise, I’m happy to blend (the dread at lucky draws – yes, I want to win something, but no, I do not want to go on stage).

I think that’s why I love Helena Bonham-Carter.  The woman is so out there she’s her own country.  From her unconventional partnership with Tim Burton (2 children, separate homes, joined by a tunnel/corridor), I love that she dresses just as she likes.  It’s almost as if she’s decided ‘well if you think I’m eccentric, suck it up people!’

I could never never stick out like this.  But all hail the Red Queen for breaking the blah of Hollywood!  (although the hair could be better…)

she looks almost nice!

Playing Dress Up

November 3rd, 2010

It’s that time of year when great party dresses start appearing.  And I’ve been unable to resist the constant nudges by net-a-porter to look at the new dresses in stock.

OK, the Sing dollar is at a high against the US dollar and the GBP, so I guess it’s cheaper…??

And seriously, these are fantasy dresses…not just because of the prices, but the kind of bodies that go into them.

Rachel Bilson

Scarlett Johansson

I looked at these dresses and imagined myself as a cross between Rachel Bilson, Maggie Q and Scarlett Johanssen.  (oh, IF ONLY!!)  You get the idea.  Very lean, great legs, good muscle tone and great skin.  Except Maggie Q is a bit too skinny…  And then thought, well if I was that particular version of the G, had a credit card that was abundantly resourced, parties to go to, and a hot hot guy to impress, what would I choose??

So – do you agree with my choices??

All at www.net-a-porter.com

Love this, by Rachel Gilbert – £551.  It can be classy..resist the urge to sluttify it with crazy gladiator heels.  Semi-crazy gladiator heels will do.

This Tory Burch is right up my alley.  It’s black (I have many many LBDs), it’s subtle, it’s got embellishments and the drapes complement your curves. £280.85

I love this one by Matthew Williamson!  What a perfect New Year’s Eve dress!  It’s happy, optimistic, party, cute, and sexy.

there’s more…

Jimmy Choo hearts Uggs

October 28th, 2010

Huh.  Not an obvious combo but I think it’s growing on me.

Kinda like my studded Fit Flops.  But if I see someone wearing these down Orchard Road I am calling the Fashion Police, pronto.

Aveda and Lush, now in Sing

October 19th, 2010

The Toiletries Gods heard me!

My favourite brands have arrived in Sing!  Oh be still my shallow, superficial, toiletry-fetishist heart.

Aveda is available at many hairsalons and a standalone store in Ngee Ann City, B1.  Granted, it’s not quite the full selection, but the main stuff: Rosemary Mint (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, with a gentle smell of mint), Shampure (shampoo and conditioner, with a light flowery fragrance), some skincare (including the new anti-ageing Green Science) and the new chakra fragrances are available.  My favourite product is the amazing foot moisturiser Foot Relief – honestly, it makes your feet as smooth as a baby’s!  And the delicious tea – perk: they offer you some when you walk into the store : )

My other favourite toiletries brand, Lush, is known for using natural recipes for the good of your skin and hair.  I love the thought that when you are using the products you are nourishing your skin.  Now at last, Lush has opened at Wisma, in the basement.

My poor friends who travel to/from the UK have had to keep me in Lush stock.Try Angels on Bare Skin – a fantastic face scrub that doesn’t dry out your skin but cleans it, feeds it and gives you a glow.  Lush’s version of a medieval recipe, it contains ground almonds and lavender oil.

Angels on Bare Skin

My other love, the Mask of Magnaminty is a delicious weekly mask for your face.  China clay and bentonite gel will pull the dirt from your pores, ground aduki beans and evening primrose seeds exfoliate surface skin cells, and peppermint oil nourish your skin plus you smell nice and minty.

My only gripe is, it’s so expensive, compared to anywhere else – including Hong Kong.  I don’t get why.

But well, what price for the freshly-made face masks – BBSeaweed and my favourite, Brazened Honey (improves my skin visibly!)

Find out more about what goes into Lush products at www.lush.co.uk and the Lush Singapore facebook page.
