Halloween Macabre

October 29th, 2010

To get you in the mood for your weekend Halloween bashes, some inspiration…

Yeah, so, bad mascara.  Bad fake eyelashes.  So what, you say.  No – artist Jessica Harrison is wearing FLIES’ LEGS as false eyelashes.  ACK!!

I don’t think I like the world Jessica lives in.  Look at her other art:

and this

Trick, or treat??

Jimmy Choo hearts Uggs

October 28th, 2010

Huh.  Not an obvious combo but I think it’s growing on me.

Kinda like my studded Fit Flops.  But if I see someone wearing these down Orchard Road I am calling the Fashion Police, pronto.

The Town

October 27th, 2010

A big, BIG bravo to Ben Affleck, who co-scripted, directed and starred in this quality movie.

7/10 from me >>  don’t miss this

It’s a gritty, well-paced, sensitive action-caper movie.  Lots of shooting, car chases, and enough violence for me to cover my eyes.

Set in Charlestown, Boston, which is known for producing robbers and crooks, the movie follows Doug MacRay (Affleck) and his gang of bank robbers.

Although it reflects inner-city grit, it doesn’t descend totally into the depths of indie ugly -- it does have an indie story-telling spirit-  bad things do happen.

The story unfolds from the criminals’ perspective, and interestingly, the lines blur on who you root for.

Jeremy Renner is an excellent badass sidekick.  Blake Lively has a small role as his doped-up sister; and a large part of the narrative is the complications caused when MacRay falls for the victim of a previous heist (Rebecca Hall) and what happens as a result of that.  Jon Hamm is the FBI agent determined on catching this band of thieves.

Lest you think it’s all slick, light and Italian Job-bish, it really isn’t.  It isn’t too pretty, it isn’t too happy-endingish and it doesn’t sell out.

Affleck does a great job both as director and as lead actor.  I loved Rebecca Hall as the unknowing, vulnerable victim and Jeremy Renner  is so credible as the trigger happy, gangsta sidekick.  Even though I’m a fan (loved him in The Hurt Locker) I found him pretty revolting in this, he’s so good.  Hamm doesn’t quite bring it as the FBI guy but nearly does.  Look out too for The Florist:  memorable character, great actor.

This is a really good caper film: see it if you can.  Although it leans towards being a straightforward boy action movie, there’s a rich enough storyline, high level acting and good pacing to appeal to most.

PS.  For the first 10 minutes I couldn’t understand the thick Boston accent but you get there.

The Best Chai Png?

October 21st, 2010

I’ve been asking around for ‘the best chai png’ here in Sg Land.

Or, curry rice/scissor cut rice…even economic rice it’s been called.  Anyway, rice n stuff.

There was a great scissor cut stall at Maxwell Market but alas that’s now gone.  The one in Jalan Besar is still there.

Nephew Ryan promised me his find at Redhill Market was IT. (#01-74)

So off we went-

And stood in the queue…service was pretty brisk.

and piled a plate high for me to try:

It wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t say it was the bomb.  The curry gravy is the best part:  it’s rich and flavourful, but I missed the egg tofu…although the selection was pretty big, some of my favourite dishes were missing.

It’s a lot better than some of the awful cheapskate stalls I’ve come across – you know the ones with really thin curry gravy and mysterious deep fried things.  But not quite The One.

So my search continues.

Anyone have any tips?  I passed by one at Katong that looked promising…

PS: if you are there though, try the chai tow kway.  It’s really good although the portions are little. The stall sign is pink and has a couple of Mickey Mouses (Mice?) on it.

Aveda and Lush, now in Sing

October 19th, 2010

The Toiletries Gods heard me!

My favourite brands have arrived in Sing!  Oh be still my shallow, superficial, toiletry-fetishist heart.

Aveda is available at Paragon at the new hair salon, Kelture.  Granted, it’s not quite the full selection, but the main stuff: Rosemary Mint (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, with a gentle smell of mint), Shampure (shampoo and conditioner, with a light flowery fragrance), some skincare (including the new anti-ageing Green Science) and the new chakra fragrances are available.  My favourite product is the amazing foot moisturiser Foot Relief – honestly, it makes your feet as smooth as a baby’s!  Available at Kelture, #05-07 Paragon.

Update Nov 10:  Aveda products will be available through selected hair salons in Singapore.  Not all salons will carry the full range.  There are no plans for a full Aveda store.

My other favourite toiletries brand, Lush, is known for using natural recipes for the good of your skin and hair.  I love the thought that when you are using the products you are nourishing your skin.  Now at last, someone is stocking some Lush here.  At the Holland Village Shopping Centre, Summerloft carries a small range of skincare, the (in)famous bathbombs and a stack of soaps.  When you hit the second floor you can smell the familiar smell of Lush presence!

I’ve asked the nice lady to bring in some of the amazing bodyscrubs so let’s hope that happens.

My poor friends who travel to/from the UK have had to keep me in Lush stock.Try Angels on Bare Skin – a fantastic face scrub that doesn’t dry out your skin but cleans it, feeds it and gives you a glow.  Lush’s version of a medieval recipe, it contains ground almonds and lavender oil.

Angels on Bare Skin

My other love, the Mask of Magnaminty is a delicious weekly mask for your face.  China clay and bentonite gel will pull the dirt from your pores, ground aduki beans and evening primrose seeds exfoliate surface skin cells, and peppermint oil nourish your skin plus you smell nice and minty.

Available at Summerloft, #02-05  Holland Village Shopping Centre, 67638682

Fab Thai Massage

October 14th, 2010

You might also like Massage at Bliss Spa and We Love Massages

Oh yes, I love me a good massage.  And you must know I love you if I’m prepared to share my massage finds with you.

Twitter and FB followers know I fell out with Kenko Vivo and Uncle Tan (knot undoer extraordinaire) because they insisted on drilling and renovations during massage.  It never dawned on them that you might not want a wall next to you being drilled while you are being massaged.  Don’t start me…  grrr  *#@*##!!!!!

But because of that, I found a wonderful new place… over in Harbourfront, Thai Odyssey is a for-real Thai massage place.

Thai massage (not Thai Odyssey)

As in, the real Thai massage, by Thai masseurs.  The location (by the Ferry check-ins) might make you think they do er, other things as well but no, they do honest to goodness good massage.

Nice decor, and nothing tawdry or seedy about it.

Khun Piyoke does an awesome 90 minute traditional Thai massage.  Seriously, I think I get to the fringes of the galaxy I am so out of it.  Even though she’s pulling, kneading, pushing, twisting, I still find myself totally disappearing into a mushy pile of ahhhh.  It’s hard physical work for the masseuse and though she’s little, she’s strong!

There’s currently a special offer on for $68 for an hour’s Thai massage.

I also want to give the herbal compress a go too.

Hot, herbs, plus massage, ah…
